Double-weighted statement

This 328-page (142K word) book took 50% of SJ's research time in the REF cycle, including six months dedicated leave in 2010-11. It is a cross-disciplinary study in both archaeology and ancient history, involving detailed engagement with a wide range of primary evidence and secondary debate, radically rethinking understandings of the military, warfare, and armed violence in the Roman world, traced through the history of the sword as artefact, symbol and metaphor. The book includes 75 illustrations of actual swords, reconstructions, etc., prepared by SJ as part of both research process and publication.
