Interferometric method for determining the sum of the flexoelectric coefficients (e[sub 1]+e[sub 3]) in an ionic nematic material
The flexoelectric polarisation has a critical role in switching bistable displays. Based on work funded by EPSRC linked grants (GR/S90621/01; C.V. Brown; Nottingham Trent lead organisation, and GR/S90614/01; E.P. Raynes F.R.S. Oxford University). Industrial support received from QinetiQ (Malvern, UK: R. Miller) and Sharp Laboratories of Europe Ltd (Oxford, UK: M.Tillin). Recognised by further EPSRC funding (EP/E063489/1) leading to new types of bistable displays [J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 43, 495105 (2010)]. Applied in a contract with Merck Chemicals Ltd (Chilworth, UK: O. Parri) on the influence of flexoelectricity on liquid crystal properties.
