Additional information

The interfaces in hybrid systems are critical to device performance. Here we showed that the polar ZnO surfaces induce an unfavourable orientation effect in the CuPc crystal; whereas thicker films showed a co-existence of two different stacking regimes. A reinterpretation of the accepted structure of the herringbone phase was provided. This work explains the poor charge extraction and device efficiency when ZnO is used as an active layer in PV cells. The results are being used, together with our Industrial partners, within our EPSRC/TSB funded programme (EP/J500161/1) to guide transparent conducting oxide (TCO) development for hybrid devices.
