Additional information

Molecular nanowires with unprecedented lengths, and aspect ratios approaching those of carbon nanotubes were obtained. However, compared to carbon nanotubes, the wires have added chemical functionality, including a spin on the transition metal, that can lead to magnetism. The new crystal structure, elucidated by transmission microscopy and diffraction, and high crystallinty are favourable for solar cells (due to the broad absorption spectrum) and transistors (high on-off ratios and large mobilities were observed). The work has led to invitations to conferences for the senior author, including a keynote talk at “The 12th International Conference on Molecule-Based Magnets”, Beijing, October 2010.
