The prospect of using diluted magnetic semiconductors for electronic storage has resulted in many reports of DMS behaviour in oxides. Unfortunately many are wrong as the DMS is simply a result of impurities, second phase or incorrect processing. First systematic study of a system reported to exhibit DMS: KTaO3 doped with Mn. Found that when processed correctly there was no evidence for DMS and is significant because it is now certain that many reports of Dilute Magnetic Semiconductors in oxides are mistaken. The paper offers an unequivocal path verifying the behaviour. Contributed to EP/G060940 £3.9M Programme grant.
