Additional information

Masers are not widely used because they require high magnetic fields and cryogenic temperatures. This paper showed for the first time that solid state masing was possible at room temperature and in the earth’s field. Cover Photo of Nature and substantial press and journal coverage. Listed in the top 10 Physics breakthroughs of 2012 by Physics World The implications for industrial application are considerable for low noise amplifiers to use in accelerators for medical use. Interest from Bruker for EPR/ESR, Philips for medical applications. Led to patent application GB1209246.6 and EP/K011804 £1.2M grant and £1.1M EPSRC fellowship for Oxborrow.
