Additional information

This paper expands on the findings made in a Letter to Nature (Gourlay and Dahle, 2007) that shear banding in semi-solid alloys is caused by granular phenomena similar to landslides. It is shown how a granular approach fits into the framework for semi-solid deformation. This, and subsequent work, led to a £620k RAEng/EPSRC Research Fellowship for Gourlay 2008-13 (EP/F050682/1), £125k EPSRC grant EP/H016848/1 (Gourlay PI 2010-12) and a Keynote lecture at the International Conference on Semi-Solid Processing of Alloys and Composites (Gourlay 2012)
