Tough, bio-inspired hybrid materials.
This work demonstrates how the concept of bio-inspiration can be translated to the fabrication of ceramic-based composites with unprecedented mechanical properties (nacre-like materials with specific toughness comparable to aluminium alloys). It is one of the first descriptions of a practical bio-inspired structural material. The technique is being used by many groups internationally, e.g. Lawrence Berkeley NationalLab and Dartmouth(USA), Karlsruh -Institute of Technology(Germany). The paper received an honourable mention in the AAAS Newcomb-Cleveland Prize (2009), and has triggered invited and keynote talks (MRS,MS&T,ECS). It has supported successful grant applications from ERDC (USA), EU and EPSRC that amount more than £5M.
