Additional information

This paper demonstrated a new, computationally efficient “2.5 D” method for calculating the frequencies and standing-wave patterns of whispering-gallery modes in optical microresonators. This method has since been exploited by dozens of research groups across the world for developing ultra-low-threshold lasers, optical frequency combs and bio sensors, as well as various plasmonic devices. The sustained interest has motivated a commercial software company, namely COMSOL AB, to embed it (with substantial proprietary modifications) within version 4.3a onwards of its "Multiphysics" product. Industrial referee: Dr. Magnus Olsson, Manager Computational Electromagnetics Development Group, COMSOL AB(www.comsol.com)Stockholm; magnus.olsson@comsol.com, tel: +4684129500
