Additional information

Cavity-stabilized lasers are key components in measurement applications based on optical spectroscopy and interferometry, e.g. optical atomic frequency standards and the laser calibration of coordinate measurement machines, as developed in the UK by Rennishaw plc. (http://www.renishaw.com). This “landmark” paper, based on an Anglo-French collaboration, described a novel, mechanically-isolated cavity that attained the ultimate limit of frequency stability set by Brownian motion. The knowledge it disclosed has influenced subsequent, improved designs, such as the space qualified optical cavities now being manufactured by Sodern in France http://www.sodern.com. Industrial referee: Dr. Giorgio Santarelli, Laboratoire Photonique, Numérique et Nanosciences, University Bordeaux; giorgio.santarelli@institutoptique.fr
