Additional information

Solar water splitting is widely considered as the Holy Grail of sustainable energy production. Recently it has been found that post-transition metal oxides (e.g. BiVO4) are candidate materials. Some of these oxides display distorted crystal structures so a correlation between structural phenomena and electronic structure is needed. This work highlights the nature of the interaction between the anion and post-transition cation in creating structural distortions in BiVO4, causing a narrowing of the band-gap and increased visible light absorption. A series including this work was highlighted by recent publication of a (front cover) article in Chemical Society Reviews by Payne.
