Additional information

This work presents the first validation of a theoretical result of Eshelby,Frank and Nabarro(1951) in Philosophical Magazine for the form of a stress field ahead of a dislocation pile-up (e.g. describes mechanisms behind cracking, strengthening). Stress variation has been used to measure the strength of an individual grain boundary, which opens up a new field of strength based grain boundary engineering. This work won 1st prize poster presentation the UK EBSD conference, has been presented at invited seminar talks at Norwegian University of Science&Technology and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, as well as opening a conference session at MS&T 2011.
