Additional information

SbSI is a highly piezoelectric material (d33>1000pC/N, double that of PZT). This is the first ever demonstration of the growth of arrays of nanorods of SbSI, and the measurement of ferroelectric behaviour in them. Previous piezoelectric nanorod growth has focused on ZnO, which has an piezo coefficient orders of magnitude smaller than SbSI. ZnO is currently being studied in the USA for nanoscale vibrational energy harvesting applications. The new material reported here has the potential to revolutionise that field.
