Damping of inter-area oscillations in mixed AC/DC networks using WAMS based supplementary controller
This paper was invited for the publication in the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. It proposes a novel control design to manage damping of the inter-area electromechanical modes in power networks, which if not appropriately damped may result in large-scale blackouts affecting millions of people. This control methodology can be applied to any system, not just those found in power engineering, where there are poorly damped modes that need to be managed. The extensions of the concepts in this paper are being explored in a follow-on HVDC project funded by National Grid (contact details available).
