This essay considers the Third Reich’s persecution and expulsion of Jews from Alsace. The study argues that it is important to analyse the continuities between pre-war local political attitudes towards German nationalism and the persecutions after annexation, as well as to attempt to describe accurately the apparatus of persecution. Although most Reichssicherheitshauptamt archives for Alsace no longer survive, it is nevertheless possible to argue that several local factors enabled the remarkably swift introduction of the persecution of Jews; some of those factors outlived the end of the war and contributed to the tardiness displayed in Alsace in addressing holocaust memorialisation.
