Chapters 2-4 by Laybourn focus upon changes in the police force during the inter-war years, in terms of its professionalisation, close association with the Home Office, and the development of scientific and detective work. Chapters 5-8 by Taylor provide the first detailed examination of the impact of increases in motor vehicle numbers, highlighting the changing responsibilities of the police, pressures upon chief constables as more men were diverted into traffic duty, the problem of overcoming ‘the motorist as victim’ mentality and the danger of alienating middle-class support.
