Chapters 5-8 by Taylor provide the first detailed examination of the impact of increases in motor vehicle numbers, highlighting the changing responsibilities of the police, pressures upon chief constables as more men were diverted into traffic duty, the problem of overcoming ‘the motorist as victim’ mentality and the danger of alienating middle-class support.
