Additional information

A new model describing a reactive plume which alters the buoyancy flux was presented. A simple criterion for plume collapse was derived and tested numerically. This work has important implications in a wide variety of fields including understanding the dispersal of pollutants from industrial chimneys, the behaviour of volcanic eruption columns (in particular whether the plume collapses or rises into the upper atmosphere) and the dispersion of accidental releases of oil/gas mixtures. This work was presented at the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (Montreal, 2009).
