English abstract

This is the first comprehensive biographical assessment of Paolo Zacchia, the ‘founding father’ of legal medicine, whose work of synthesis, Quaestiones Medico-Legales (1621-1635) shaped practice for centuries to come. Based on previously unexploited archival material, the chapter explores Zacchia’s origins (possibly in a conversos family) and his activities within the community of Roman physicians. The chapter also highlights his interactions with seventeenth-century Roman society at large. The volume is the first publication devoted to Zacchia to appear with a coherent historical perspective.
