Additional information

This paper addressed the dependency of shock and stress wave propagation on material orientation. A vector shock equation of state (EOS), applicable to modelling of orthotropic metals and composites, was developed, validated and implemented into the commercial non-linear finite element program DYNA3D. The EOS has been successfully applied to modelling of debris impact on aircraft aluminium alloy and composite structures, for example with Rolls Royce modelling of blade off impacts on open rotor composite blades (Dr James.Fynlayson@Rolls-Royce.com) and aircraft dithcing with AIRBUS, Dieter.Hachenberg@airbus.com.
