Significance of output:

This paper presents for the first time, lifetime predictions and the operating regime under which a new type of ion engine using 3 rather than 2 grids offers advantages. Such a thruster can provide significant increases in thrust density and specific impulse enabling such advanced future missions as building infrastructures at the L1 point of the Earth Moon system, exploration of outer planets of the solar system, and the building of infrastructures on Mars. The research, funded by an FP7 grant is strongly supported by ESA, who have included it in their roadmap for future high power electric propulsion thrusters.
