Significance of output:

This paper shows the first mathematical model of the human arm for use with experiments using Iterative Learning Control and Functional Electrical Stimulation. Use of the model demonstrates clearly that the engineering of Iterative Learning Control with Functional Electrical Stimulation can be used to estimate elasticity and viscous friction parameters. Previous dynamic models have not included a full description of the passive arm properties. These data can be used to monitor clinical treatment. This research featured in a Department of Health report presented to parliament 2007-08 and contributed to the subsequent award of EPRSC grant (EP/I01909X/1; £464,231).
