Significance of output:

This is the first paper reporting an electrically reconfigurable metamaterial for the optical spectral range, thus starting this new research direction, which has led to a £190k DSTL grant (DSTLX 1000064074, started March 2012), a keynote talk at Metamaterials’2013, invited talks at GRC Plasmonics 2012 and NanoMeta 2013 and press coverage by LaserFocusWorld, ScienceDaily, Nanotechnology Now, theengineer.co.uk and rdmag.com. This patented technology (US patent application 13/167,890 filed 29.9.2011) combines metamaterials with MEMS ideas and nanotechnology to realize metamaterials with tunable optical properties for applications, such as adjustable spectral filters, modulators and switches, chameleon surfaces and dynamically controllable transformation optics devices.
