Significance of output:

This fundamental paper provides the first robust stability certificates for adaptive control using a general unstructured uncertainty model: a major open goal in control theory for decades. This paper and the breakthrough it represents has attracted much interest and has inspired further independent work by leading groups in Europe and USA, e.g. Profs. Georgiou (Minnesota) and Hovakimyan (UIUC) have established robust stability of the adaptive controllers due to Hovakimyan (UIUC) – controllers which have been successfully flight tested by Boeing (2010 AirSTAR GTM T2), and this approach was used to analyse robustness of funnel controllers by (Prof. Ilchmann, TU Ilmenau).
