Additional information

This paper established for the first time the fundamental relationships between hierarchy and the mechanics of cellular solids, showing it to be often deleterious, but potentially offering large performance gains vs traditional forms. The work has been used since by researchers seeking to improve density specific properties of composites and honeycombs, nanomaterials (often unavoidably hierarchical), and biomimetic materials for tissue engineering.
