Double-weighted statement

This 140,000 word monograph is the product of multiple sojourns in German archives funded by the British Academy, the Humboldt Foundation and the DAAD; the writing was funded by the Leverhulme Trust/ British Academy. Drawing both on conventional archive sources and on landscape, architecture and material culture, and the methods of museum studies, anthropology and literary theory as well as social and cultural history, it offers a revisionist account of the processes of memory formation in one post-war city. It won the Fraenkel Prize for Contemporary History in 2008.
