This theoretical paper proposed a new approach to thinking about back pain and how the body responds and adapts to this. It has provoked great interested and has led to two grants; a Whitaker International Fellowship 2012-13 ($70k), and a Clinical Allied Healthcare Professions Studentship from AR UK which commenced 2013 (£232k Grant: WSSU-P40994). Preliminary findings of this work have been presented at the International Biomechanics Meeting and won a prize at the National Science Foundation’s summer school on Biocomplexity & Biodesign (Istanbul, 2013).
