Additional information

Impaired arterial NO production is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease but there are currently no simple, non-invasive methods for detecting it. We have proposed using the effect of NO on the peripheral pulse waveform to overcome this significant clinical problem. This study, initiated by a £335k BBSRC grant (E17208, PI: Weinberg), used a novel numerical model to elucidate how NO alters the waveform. It led to BHF funding (FS/09/030/27812, £274k) for Alastruey and Hunt in my group and then a KCL lectureship for Alastruey, and to an invited talk at the 6th World Congress of Biomechanics, Singapore, 2010.
