Additional information

This work demonstrated non-linear mechanisms of multisensory integration as a cross-species principle. It had major impact on the priority area selection for bio-inspired research funded by the US Air Force Research Laboratory and the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL): at joint SOAR meetings on Bio-inspired Unmanned Air Systems from 2009-2013, where the PI contributed as financial co-organizer (FA8655-11-1-5073, £16k) and speaker, multisensory integration and gaze stabilization were identified as key features enabling high aerial manoeuvrability. An EPSRC/DSTL Industrial CASE award and a DSTL national PhD-scheme studentship (DSTLX1000068774, £93k; DSTLX1000070718, £137k) were secured to intensify research on gaze-stabilization systems.
