Additional information

This study supports our Mode Sensing Hypothesis (Taylor and Krapp, Adv. Insect Physiol. 2007), which proposes conjugated non-orthogonal coordinate systems for sensing and actuation. It defined a key research direction on the implementation road map for a Programme Arrangement (PA) between the USAF Research Laboratory and the UK-Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) on Bio-inspired Unmanned Air Systems. The PA includes a DSTL-supported virtual Centre of Excellence for networking between UK academia, SMEs, and DSTL, of which the PI is a founding member. A resulting cross-Atlantic research collaboration on Mode Sensing (P40402, £479k) with AFRL funding commenced in 2013.
