Rational diversification of a promoter providing fine-tuned expression and orthogonal regulation for synthetic biology.
This was the first published use of Transcription Activator Like (TAL) proteins as reconfigurable repressors of gene expression for synthetic biology. Since 2010, TAL-type proteins have generated a multi-million pound industry (Life Tech, Cellectis) and were jointly-awarded Nature Method of the Year 2011. Materials developed here have been distributed by Addgene for use in 26 other labs and Dr Ellis is now on the Scientific Advisory Board of Addgene, the world’s largest DNA distributor. The paper has been viewed online over 7000 times (PLOS One Metrics) and is named a key paper in the PLOS One Synthetic Biology Collection (http://tinyurl.com/synbioC).
