Our state of the art experimental technique of measuring connectivity in rodents at the moment of eye opening, coupled with novel computational models, permitted us to disentangle the development of receptive fields and intra-cortical connectivity, showing that former precedes the latter, thereby laying the groundwork for understanding the development of cortical columns in the visual cortex. The computational model resolved the previously puzzling experimental findings of Li et al Nature 2012 and Yu et al Nature 2012.
