Additional information

This paper arose from a multicentre randomised controlled clinical trial into the post-operative management of spinal surgery, winning both National and International prizes (Back Care 2012; International Society for the Lumbar Spine, 2011) and drawing together surgeons and physiotherapist across the West London region. The novel trial design permitted the evaluation of both education- and rehabilitation-based management approaches, identifying unexpected findings in relation to surgical approaches. Consequently it has led to a new Cochrane review undertaken by McGregor (DOI 10.1002/14651858.CD009644) and prompted the revision of an existing review (DOI: 10.1002/14651858.CD003007.pub2).
