Additional information

This work is an essential element in the quality assurance of the VORF (Vertical Offshore Reference Frames) concept. Considerable resources in terms of vessels, gauges, and personnel were deployed by the UK Hydrographic Office (authors 4 and 5) to derive the test data, reflecting the importance of the derived models to the hydrographic community. Since the models derived in the VORF project impact on navigation and related areas, they have important SOLAS (safety of life at sea) implications and need to be rigorously tested and proved before adoption. This paper provides the essential basis for this process.
