Additional information
Rare earth magnets are expensive, increasingly difficult to procure, and their extraction is harmful to the environment. This fundamental research, funded by a Commonwealth scholarship, presents a new topology of Permanent Magnet Flux Switching Motor in which rare earth magnet is more efficiently used. Results show the new topology improves magnet usage by 40% when compared to a traditional PM machine, and torque density is increased by 100% when compared to the alternative DC field wound flux switching machine flux switching machines.
