Gary Carpenter Doubles. Linda Merrick: clarinet; Paul Goodey, oboe; RNCM Wind Orchestra, Clark Rundell.
The composer and conductor came to this project already familiar with having worked on its première performance s in Manchester and the US with different RNCM staff soloists: the oboist, Melinda Maxwell and the clarinetist, Paul Vowles (see Carpenter, Output 2). The performance challenge, and my research question, was how new soloists’ differing interpretive perspectives and prerogatives shaped the text in performance. It was unusual in my own practice to work on a recently-conceived work, but not as one of its first performers. Intersections between the conductor, composer, and the two new soloists (the oboist, Paul Goodey, was another close colleague at RNCM) led to new approaches to the text and the fashioning of an interpretation drawing upon previous iterations, but reshaping the work in performance, and it is the result of this process of recombination which is presented on this, the first commercial recording of Gary Carpenter’s double concerto for oboe, clarinet and wind orchestra.
