The first paper to employ our novel techniques for evaluating knee joint mechanics. It was key to the £11M award (2009) for Imperial's Wellcome/EPSRC Medical Engineering Centre (088844/Z/09/Z), is used in research on total shoulder replacement funded by a £1M Wellcome award (2013; WT098269/Z/12/Z) and resulted in keynote lectures at BME Hong Kong 2008, ESSKA Oslo 2009 and EFORT Vienna 2009. Co-author Kessler was employed at the orthopaedic implant company that part-funded the work. The method has been used in the design of new knee joint replacements (patent #US 2011/0218635) currently in clinical trials and licensed to a manufacturer (www.stanmoreimplants.com).
