This paper is the first to show how 3D textures can be captured from lesions in vivo using the UWE Skin Analyser, and analysed to provide a new and distinct method for skin cancer diagnosis. By collaborating with the NHS in collecting the 3D data, the research showed how improvements are possible over the existing 2D ABCD and skin line pattern approaches for separating malignant melanoma from benign lesions. This work, led by L. Smith, led to the UWE project: ‘Application of Photometric Stereo in Dermatology’, (Photoderm K1524H); being funded at £647K by the TSB, for further development and clinical use of the Skin Analyser.
