Oxidation-reduction reactions of simple hydroxamic acids and plutonium(IV) ions in nitric acid
Advanced PUREX/UREX+ nuclear reprocessing routes are under development in the UK and US as weapons proliferation-resistant alternatives to current processes. The significance of this output lies in its contribution to understanding plutonium routing in Advanced PUREX/UREX+. Originality lies in its presentation of the first quantitative description of key Pu-hydroxamate species thermodynamics and the first under reprocessing conditions. Rigour lies in the range of conditions and techniques used to characterise system time dependence and thermodynamics. The output stems from an NNL-funded research assistantship (robin.j.taylor@nnl.co.uk), has stimulated collaboration discussions with US workers (Paulenova, Oregon State) and is continuing through an NNL-sponsored EngD.
