Energy aware planning of multiple virtual infrastructures over converged optical network and IT physical resources
Paper presents pioneering work on planning energy-efficient virtual cloud infrastructures utilising shared optical network and IT resources. Proposed scheme enables new "infrastructure as a Service" business models for network and data-centre infrastructure owners and cloud service providers. Outputs were validated in large-scale demonstrations involving Europe's largest infrastructure provider [contact: Sales Manager, Interoute, Italy] and software developer SAP who defined use-cases as part of European project "GEYSERS" (No. 248657, €7M, 2010-3). Interoute's business units use planning tool as part of their infrastructure service offering. Work led to follow-on European grant "LIGHTNESS" (No. 318606, €3.5M, 2012-5) to design ultra-energy-efficient intra-data-centre infrastructures.
