Nuclear reactor core graphite degrades with age due to oxidation and radiation. In this work, funded by Magnox Ltd., microstructural properties of graphite were assessed for first time using focused ion-beam. Work led to successful EPSRC grant application "QUBE" (EP/J019801/1, £532k, 2012-5, in collaboration with Universities of Oxford and Manchester, SERCO, Magnox Ltd., EDF, Arup and AMEC) to investigate structural properties of graphite. Insight obtained in this paper led to approach proposed for decommissioning of reactor core graphite in EPSRC project "C14-BIG" (EP/I036354/1, £728k, 2011-5).
