Additional information

Model Predictive Control (MPC) means control based on real-time numerical optimisation. Paper proposes way to get provably-stable MPC that is distributed (i.e. each aircraft planning its own route) and cooperative instead of greedy. Results show that near-ideal cooperation (i.e. same as having one centralised controller for all) can be achieved with fraction of centralised-computation cost, by making each agent "considerate" of its neighbours. Work led to further collaborations with BAE Systems on MPC through the Systems Engineering for Autonomous Systems Defence Technology Centre (SEASDTC) projects IF049 (£25k, 2008) and AA016 (£134k, 2008-10) on adaptive navigation.
