Additional information

Paper describes brushless-outer-rotor fault-tolerant modular-winding permanent-magnet machine topology. This has many applications, especially in aerospace, where single fault-tolerant motor can provide same reliability as multiple motors with redundancy. Various combinations of poles and slots are analysed. Paper proposes design methodology that optimises machine design for particular application via combination of finite-element analysis and genetic algorithm. Work led directly to various research projects, including design of contra-rotating wind turbine funded by Intech Ltd., subsequently patented in UK (GB2447283A) and USA (US2008224475A1).
