Additional information

Modern multi-antenna wireless communication systems require fast (real-time) decoders. Optimal detection is known to be an NP-hard problem (i.e. computationally very difficult). Paper proposes two novel algorithms which circumvent complexity, while still achieving near-optimal performance. Performance / complexity trade-off was order-of-magnitude better than any other solution at time of publication. Work resulted in granted patents (EP1881636A1 and US20080019428) which are owned and being exploited by Toshiba Corporation [contact: Deputy Managing Director]. Influenced by this work, Toshiba subsequently developed related decoder, which is used in their telecommunications equipment.
