Additional information

Over last 20 years, there have been great advances in active materials and actuation technologies leading to increased opportunities to remove passive mechanical systems. Designers now desire simple approaches for actuator selection based on engineering requirements (e.g. force, stroke, frequency). Paper develops new approach for actuator selection at design stage. Case studies are used to demonstrate and validate approach. Research was catalyst for European grant (No. 278393, €471k, 2011-4) in collaboration with AgustaWestland, Microtecnica Ltd and Politecnico di Torino, which investigated actuation of an active gurney flap for rotorcraft .
