Additional information

Re-lifing structures (e.g. bridges) by post-reinforcing is economically and environmentally sound. If structure is hyperstatic, the post-reinforcement and moments used to specify reinforcement are inter-dependent. Using symbolic analysis of this inter-dependency, paper presents discovery of easily-programmable physically-meaningful criteria which optimise moments and hence post-reinforcement. Paper spawned ideas which led to Sebastian's Leverhulme / Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship (2011-2) to study post-reinforcing of hyperstatic concrete structures.
