This paper is an invited contribution to a special issue of IJMBL, containing substantially expanded versions of papers published at the 9th World Conference on Mobile and Contextual Learning (mLearn 2010), the premier international conference in this field. It describes the first attempt to implement measures that mitigate excessive device focus in collaborative mobile learning activities for children. The acceptance rate for mLearn 2010 was 27% with all papers receiving at least three reviews. Only the best five papers were invited to contribute to the IJMBL special issue.
