Additional information

This paper (GoogleScholar citations > 80) established the principle of using digital signal processing to compensate for imperfections in the optical coherent receiver, even in the presence of quantization noise. By allowing the use of lower grade optical components, in order to cost reduce the digital coherent receiver significantly, the work enables high-speed optical access to provide high-bandwidth broadband services cost-effectively. This work forms the basis of the 3M€ PIANO+EU/TSB funded project CRITICAL (£302,296 to UCL, PI: Savory) focused on realising low-cost coherent receivers for access networks with UCL partnering with industrialists from Oclaro, NPL, Deutsche Telekom, Nokia-Siemens and PMC-Sierra.
