Additional information

Spatial multiplexing, to increase transmission capacity, became an active research area in 2011 as evidenced by the large number of publications in the major conferences in this area, OFC and ECOC. This collaborative work, between UCL and Cambridge, initiated following Thomsen’s work in MIMO enabled 40 Gb/s transmission using mode division multiplexing in multimode fiber, OFC 2010 (citations GoogleScholar 21) shows that spatial light modulators significantly reduce the DSP complexity. This led to £1.8M EPSRC grant EP/J008842/1, (PI: Thomsen) between UCL, Cambridge, Oxford and Southampton. Thomsen invited to Co-chair the IEEE Summer Topical on Space-Division Multiplexing for Optical Communication, 2013.
