Additional information

Entirely new designs of thin planar antennas are presented. Support was from the Medical Research Council under a project on microwave medical imaging for early detection of breast cancer. The antenna structures are designed by our novel optimisation technique, specifically adapted for this class of antennas. The outcome of this work enabled a fast and efficient way of designing a new widely applicable class of leaky-wave antennas as recognized by well-known international research groups. This work led to the award of a 1-year RAEng / Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship to Dr Feresidis (Sept. 2013-Aug. 2014).
